Somatic embryogenesis in Hevea brasiliensis (Müll.Arg.) ; current advances and limits

The last presentation of the Cirad researchwork on somatic embryogenesis in rubber tree has been made in 1992. It was the International Conference on the Natural rubber, at Bangalore in India. I have chosen to present to you an overview of our work during the last years with data regarding experimental productions of vitroplants, field trials and up-to-date results on point research topics. At this time (in 1992), we were ending a studies cycle on biochemical and histological features for somatic embryogenesis from primary callus in rubber tree (Carron et al., 1995a). This process involved six successive steps: 1] callus induction from inner seedcoat of immature seed, 2] embryogenesis induction, 3] embryo development, 4] somatic embryo maturation, 5] germination, 6] conversion leading to the obtention of plantlets fully developped and ready for acclimatization. Application of this process through experimental production with clone PB 260 allowed us to measure the yield through "the number of vitroplants obtained from one hundred explants introduced in culture = 7.7" and through "the handling time necessary in order to obtain one vitroplant = 18 min" current advances and limits. (Carron et al., 1995b).
