Achievements, limits and prospects of microfinance as a means of financing agricultural and rural development: The experience in West Africa : Special paper for the annual report of CTA 2001

Assuming that microfinance, in all its diversity, becomes a permanent feature in small-scale agriculture, can it meet the whole range of financial services required by farming families in a liberalised economy? This paper addresses the question in the context of West Africa. It opens with a brief outline of microfinance. It then analyses the achievements and limits of rural microfinance and its contribution to financing agriculture in West Africa. The concluding section looks at the main ways in which microfinance could contribute more effectively to agriculture.
