GIS in a local negotiation on land management (Cévennes - France)

This document describes and analyzes the contribution of GIS to a negotiation process on land management in the Cévennes (France), gathering local people, technicians and researchers. The discussions led us to consider the gap existing between (1) the land-use lot level in which farmers and technicians fell concern and to which GIS is useful, but needs detailed spatial information and needs local people to integrate a spatial view of their practices and (2) the global level in which local people express their needs for representations of territory rather than a spatial analysis to think the land management. We discuss how GIs act as a catalyzer in the negotiation process and help people considering the spatial aspects of their practices and to create links between the parcel and the global levels.
