The rice variety evaluation network conducted by Ente Nazionale Risi in Italy

Ente Nazionale Risi is the main public organisation working on rice in Italy. It is now coordinating the largest rice variety evaluation network (RiVEN) in Europe. Ente Nazionale Risi is carrying on variety trials since 1967 when the Research Centre and the Extension Service were constituted. Trials were conducted at an on-farm level with big plots of about 2000 square meters. Just few varieties were compared in each location. Trials at an experimental level were recently added adopting small plots of about 50 square meters with the chance to compare many entries in each location. The two kind of trials give complementary results and allow fast evaluations of the new released varieties. In the last ten years the Italian rice production changed considerably the target markets. Export market became more and more important and North Europe was the preferred destination. The North European consumer prefer long B rice instead of the typical rice grown in Italy. It caused a fast need of new varieties. Public and private companies are still trying to satisfy this request and almost ten new varieties are released each year. This cause the need of a sophisticate tool to make good evaluation of stability and/or adaptability of the new genotypes. In the paper the RiVEN organisation and set up is presented with the purpose to describe how it is managed and how it can benefit the rice production system.
