Challenges for rice production in a Mediterranean climate

This paper is aimed at characterising the deep-seated changes in rice growing in European, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries and to identify the most probable trends on which a research strategy can be based. Is it possible to identify sufficiently marked common features in rice growing in this region of the world to be able to establish specificity in relation to the rest of the planet? If so, what are the research priorities and what is the contribution of the region to world efforts? The deep-seated changes in consumptiom and production are described first of all. This is followed by a series of observations likely to feed reflection on the development of a research strategy, in particular in the field of genetic resources.
