Clinical enzymology in the dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius). Part 1. Enzyme activities and distribution of AST, ALT, GGT, AP and LDH in liver kidney, muscle, myocardium and blood

To establish the enzyme activity distribution of AST (EC 2.6.1 .1), ALT (EC 2.6.1.2), GGT (EC 2.3.2.2.), AP (EC 3.1.3.1.) and LDH (EC 1.1.1.27) in liver, kidney, muscle, myocardium and red blood cells of the dromedary camels, samples were taken from 10 males, 2 to 4 years old in a slaughter house. Serum biochemical constituents were analysed by an auto-analyser Ektachem-Koclack. Tissue and serum enzymes activity were measured at 37°C. The mean concentration was 154 +/- 4 mmol/l of sodium, 4.5 +/- 0.5 mmol/for potassium, 110 +/- 5 mmol/I for chloride, 21 +/- 2 mmol/l for bicarbonate, 2.5 +/- 0.1 mmol/l for calcium, 2.1 +/- 0.3 mmol/l for phosphorus, 18 +/- 4 µmol/l for iron, 62 +/- 5 g/l for protein, 6.4 +/- 1.2 mmol/l urea, 83 +/- 11 mmol/l for creatinine, 6.4 +/- 0.7 mmol/l for glucose, 1.18 +/- 0.01 mmol/l for cholesterol, 0.25 +/- 0.06 mmol for triglycerides and less then 2 and 12 µmol/l, respectively for bilirubin and uric acid. The mean serum enzyme activities (in U/l) are 115 +/- 12 forAST, 21 +/3 for ALT, 21 +/- 4 for GGT, 92 +/- 14 for AP and 1027 +/- 152 for LDH. Except for LDH, activities of AST, ALT, GGT, and AP were predominant in kidney. The distribution of these enzymes in liver, muscle and myocardium was similar to that of other domestic ruminants. Red blood cells contained more AST, ALT and LDH activities than serum.
