New tools for land preparation in animal traction

CIRAD-SAR has been conducted research to develop new tools for seedbed preparation using animal traction. The draught-power tine spelling "Coutrier"', is designed for use during the dry season to break up the soil and allow water to penetrate as soon as the rains begin. This implement is simple to manufacture by local craftmen at a cost commensurate with the purchasing power of potential users. The "Roliculteur" is an animal-drawn cultivator, which can be used either for puddling of flooded paddy fields, on irrigated crops; or for direct tillage on light soil under wet conditions, on rainfed crops.
