Strengthening IRAD-IITA-CIRAD collaboration within the EPHTA programme being implemented in Cameroon : Mission report, 18 - 26 April 1999

Implementation of the Ecoregional Programmes entrusted to the international centres involves close association with the NARS and advanced centres with complementary experience. In that context, a "Memorandum of agreement between IITA and CIRAD" was signed in August 1996 by IITA and CIRAD general management. It ratified the work of an EPHTA meeting held in april 1996, which proposed to CIRAD, in particular, that it become an "associate organization" to provide its tree crops expertise within the Humid Forests Consortium. A round of consultations in 1997 and 1998 culminated in the idea of constructing such an alliance, first and foremost in the "benchmark zone" located in Cameroon, where IRAD and occasionally certain CIRAD researchers are associated for fruit tree cultivation and market gardening. The mission consisted in identifying lines of collaboration that are immediately operationel between IRAD, IITA and CIRAD, and institutional conditions for such collaboration to proceed on a sustainable basis. The scope of these agreements is that of tree crops (TC) and food crops (FC) based farming systems. In addition to the expertise of IRAD, the spirit of the alliances between IITA and CIRAD is a division of tasks (FC for IITA and TC for CIRAD), along with joint operations for multidisciplinary diagnoses of the current status of existing systems (joint social sciences and agronomy surveys), and for conducting trials combinig tree crops and food crops in the same plot.
