Los Ak’alches, árboles creciendo en un hábitat inundado en la Península de Yucatán
La vegetación de selva baja inundable está compuesta de pocas especies leñosas creciendo en depresiones de terreno inundados temporal o permanentemente. Presenta troncos sumamente retorcidos y es importante su papel como refugio y fuente de germoplasma florístico y como reservorio de carbono. Se caracteriza por tener una composición de especies y hábitats únicos dentro de las zonas tropicales. La selva baja inundable es un humedal que tiene un papel fundamental como refugio de fauna, sobre todo en épocas de déficit hídrico.
