Potential of edibles insects as a new source of bioactive compounds against meabolic syndrome
Edible insects are of current interest as an alternative source of proteins, even though they offer more opportunities beyond proteins and nutrients. Thus studies concerning the potential biological properties of edible insects have begun to progressively increase in the last few years. A diversity of bioactivities are being more clearly demonstrated for edible insects, such as antiinflammatory, antioxidant, antiangiogenic, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, or antilipidemic. Interestingly, many of these bioactivities are linked to the prevention and/or reduction of the risk of developing multiple pathologies included in the metabolic syndrome (MetS). Considering the increasing incidence of MetS as well as the current search of novel bioactive molecules of natural origin against it, this chapter will describe the current state of the art of the potential of the most popular edible insect species and their components against the most relevant MetS-associated diseases.
