CGIAR First Meeting, Washington, D.C., May 19, 1971: Summary of Proceedings

Summary of proceedings of the first meeting of the CGIAR, sponsored jointly by the FAO, IBRD, and UNDP, held on May 19, 1971 at IBRD headquarters in Washington, DC, and chaired by Richard H. Demuth, Director, Development Services Department of the IBRD. Delegations of 24 countries, international organizations, and private foundations attended. Announcement by eighteen governments and organizations of their decision to participate as members of the CGIAR, and ten to participate as observers. The World Bank pledged up to $3 million for calendar 1972, bringing the total available to $15 million. "CGIAR: Objectives, Composition, and Organizational Structure" (Annex III) was amended and approved by members. Twelve members were appointed to the Group's Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), including TAC Chairman Sir John Crawford, and proposed agenda for first TAC meeting discussed. FAO agreed to designate representatives from at least five developing countries to participate in future CGIAR meetings.
