Technical Advisory Committee Tenth Meeting, 22-26 July 1975: Draft Report
Summary record of TAC's Tenth Meeting held in Washington, DC from 22 to 26 July 1975. TAC Chairman Sir John Crawford presented the results of both TAC 9 and TAC 10 to the CGIAR which met immediately following. On the recommendation of its Subcommittee on Plant Nutrition, TAC endorsed CGIAR support to IFDC with the qualifications that field testing of new products be carried out through existing centers in the developing world, and that research on marketing and distribution of fertilizers be planned in consultation with the FAO and World Bank. Biological nitrogen fixation was identified as an area in which the CGIAR should consider support for projects proposed by centers. The subcommittee would continue its work.TAC reviewed recommendations made at Bellagio 7 concerning the strengthening of national agricultural research systems and gave preliminary consideration to the Rockefeller Foundation's idea for an international advisory service to bolster the capacity of national systems. More thorough discussion of the broad subject was planned. TAC would continue to investigate whether and how ICIPE could perform basic research on insects as required by IARCs. ICIPE would thus be partially supported by the CGIAR.Other topics addressed included: a suggestion from the IDB for support to CATIE in Costa Rica; the role of rice mechanization research at IRRI to be examined in the forthcoming external review of the center: a proposal from the Tropical Products Institute for support of research on non-food crops; the uses of remote sensing identified for CGIAR consideration by the World Food Conference; tropical fruits and vegetables; aquaculture; and water buffalo.TAC reviewed the proposals of the IARCs for 1976, and presented its recommendations to the CGIAR.
