TAC Quinquennial Review of CIP, 1977

Report of the 1977 TAC quinquennial review of CIP. Includes transmittal letter from review panel chairman J.G. ten Houten. The report provides a brief background on CIP, and reviews and makes recommendations regarding the center's nine research program thrusts, which are: i. Systematic collection and classification of tuber-bearing Solanum species ii. Maintenance and utilization of tuber-bearing Solanums iii. Control of selected fungal pathogens iv. Control of selected bacterial pathogens v. Control of selected viruses and insect vectors.vi. Control of important nematode pests of potatoes vii. Development of potatoes with wider adaptation to environmental stress. viii. Post-harvest technology and improvement of general nutritional quality, andix. Seed production technology for developing countries Quarantine and clean propagation methods to eliminate pathogens from genetic material were a primary concern of CIP and a focus of this review. The economics and socioeconomic research, regional programs, service activities, management, and budgetary provisions were also reviewed. The report was discussed in draft at TAC 15 in January-February 1977, and the final version endorsed at TAC 16 in May-June 1977. The CGIAR considered it in September 1977.
