Calls for an end to cotton subsidies
Benin, Mali, Burkino Faso and Chad are leading a call for the complete elimination of cotton subsidies, while insisting that they are not seeking special treatment, but simply a level playing field. There is seen to be a direct link between cotton subsidies of around US$4 billion a year and a halving of the cotton price since the mid 1990s. These price declines have led to an income loss for African farmers of US$300 million per annum and it is estimated that scrapping subsidies would boost the price of African cotton by 25%. It is being argued that cotton subsidies could be a 'make or break' issue at Cancun.
