The EU makes further commitments on animal transport

On October 30th 2003 the European Commission took further steps to strengthen international agreements on the treatment of animals during transportation with a proposal to sign the revised European convention for the protection of animals during international transport. This convention lays down the general conditions for transporting animals, and sets out special conditions for the transport of animals by road, air, sea and rail. The convention aims to encourage animals to be slaughtered in the country of origin rather than being transported internationally prior to slaughter. It also aims to define who is responsible for what.
