Tighter import controls?
Addressing the European Parliament Committee on the FMD epidemic, EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, David Byrne, highlighted how the source of the infection had been contaminated swill which contained illegally imported materials. This means the EU will be looking for ways to tighten controls on imports from third countries. Comment: Ironically, although the contamination arose from illegal imports of meat products, the EU is placing emphasis on tightening up controls on the legally conducted trade in meat products. It is difficult to see how this will address the problem of illegally imported meat products. However it is likely to increase the costs of exporting to the EU.
