Beef sector: agricultural prospects update

The EU beef market is recovering in terms of prices, production and consumption, with consumption up 9% compared to 2001. Production is however growing at a slower rate and there has therefore been some reduction in beef intervention stocks. Over the period 2003-2006 EU beef exports are expected to be 20% above the level of 2001 (between 600,000 and 650,000 tonnes per annum as opposed to 499,000 tonnes). EU pig and poultry markets are also expected to return to more normal patterns.
