Food-safety regulations are extended to the enlarged EU
Existing EU law on food safety will apply in all the ten new EU member states on their accession to the EU. As part of the transition to EU food law, new border inspection posts will be established in the new member states to check on and approve imports from third counties. This USDA briefing highlights how many establishments (over 700) in the new member states will require temporary derogations from EU food laws (for consumption only in the new territories of the EU and not for free circulation in the EU). Comment: These developments in harmonisation of legislation could harm current exports from ACP countries into these markets in products which are not fully compliant with EU food regulations.
