Strengthened traceability is central to the EU food-safety approach

The USDA notes that 'a key element in the reform of EU food law will be rules imposing the traceability of all food stuffs, animal feed and feed ingredients'. The January 2000 regulation provided the framework for this approach, with the actual rules and regulations on traceability for individual products being detailed in regulations which are still under discussion. Comment: ACP countries are likely to face major institutional constraints in complying with new traceability requirements and this could have serious implications for future agricultural trade flows.
