The mangoes
The mangoes comprise many genera and species, which grow in a variety of climatic conditions from dry savannah to rain-forest and over a great range of altitudes, but only the Common Indian Mango, Mangifera indica, is grown commercially for worldwide sale. Many other species have edible fruits, and are cultivated or harvested for local consumption or for commerce in the immediate vicinity. Many species have characteristics of fruit form and climatic tolerance that will certainly be of use in improving the growth and yield of the common mango through crossing and grafting. Species are known that are tolerant of extremely wet or cool conditions and poorly drained soils, or that show resistance to common pests and diseases.
