Biotechnologies in developing countries

This volume of the series Future-oriented studies aims to present an overview of the status of biotechnology research and development in the developing world, through a regional and national survey. While describing the situation in the early 1990s, it also includes forecasts for the end of the decade, and contributes therefore to the understanding of the economic and socio-cultural implications of biotechnologies. The priority levels accorded to biotechnology research and development (R&D) by governments and private corporations are closely related to each country's economic policy and situation. The book presents an overview of the latter for every region, as well as for selected countries within each region. Indeed, the description in broad terms of today's economic situation and that forecast for the last jeers of the twentieth century, sheds light on the present and expected status of biotechnology R&D and bioindustry. In addition to a section devoted to the institutional framework, which includes a description of government measures to organize biotechnology R&D and bioindustrial development, the various areas of biotechnology applications are outlined for each country (e.g. agriculture, forestry, big-fertilizers, livestock husbandry, aquaculture and fisheries, animal and human health, food and industrial fermentations). Collaboration between the public and private sectors in big-industry is presented for a number of countries, as are existing intellectual property regulations.
