Rural radio outreach
Radio remains the quickest, least costly and most effective way of reaching rural people if it is used imaginatively. Since 1990 CTA has supported six two-week workshops in Africa (three anglophone, three francophone) to provide professional up grading opportunities for rural broadcasters. In November a workshop was held in Port of Spain, Trinidad for 14 rural broadcasters from 10 countries in the English speaking Caribbean. One of the roles of rural radio is said to be to inform and motivate listeners, in effect to disseminate and encourage the application of scientific and technical information (STI). But audiences cannot be informed until they have been attracted, and so a major emphasis at these workshops has been to stimulate creativity among rural broadcasters and to encourage confident yet relaxed interviewing both in the studio and in the field. Another objective has been to develop in rural broadcasters an appreciation of the need to research subjects prior to interviewing and writing for radio. The interaction between workshop participants has led to a sharing of experiences and has also resulted in informal networking between participants when they have returned home. The anglophone workshop in Accra, Ghana in October 1992, resulted in the setting up of a more formal and permanent grouping ,the West African Rural Broadcasters' Association (WARBA) and the participants at the workshop in Trinidad are hoping to create a Caribbean Rural Radio Network. CTA remains committed to supporting initiatives in rural radio and continues with the production of 'Rural Radio Resource Packages' in support of rural broadcasters in Africa. Twelve subjects have been covered todate, including apiculture, aquaculture, agroforestry, soil conservation and fertility, livestock production and disease control, and integrated pest management.
