Food crops, pest problems and the environment of Nigeria
The food crop production situation in Nigeria typifies the agricultural development profile of most developing countries with a rapid rate of population growth. At best, a precarious balance is maintained between the rate of population growth and the rate of increase in staple food crop production. In times of ad verse weather or economic conditions, the gap between the demand and supply of staple food becomes seemingly unbridgeable. Anything that can be done to combat the loss of a crop through disease or pests, whether during growth, harvest or storage, helps to bridge this gap. In this book the author uses simple and uncomplicated language to help newcomers into the farming arena to understand and cope better with pest problems. The author's rationale is that 'the farmer is the most important link in the chain of decision-actions and the persons that constitute successful crop protection.'
