Sugar cane is yet another new title in the Tropical Agriculturist series published by CTA in cooperation with Macmillan. As with the others in the series, the handbook has been written for agronomists, advisers, researchers, teachers and students. However, because of the practical difficulties that arise in small-scale sugar production, this book deals only with the production of sugar on an industrial scale. Sugar cane covers in detail the characteristics and cultivation of this important crop in a variety of different agricultural systems and zones. Extensive information is provided on such features as its physiology and cropping cycles, including practical growing techniques covering soil preparation, planting, fertilization, irrigation, crop maintenance and harvesting. Detailed tables are also provided, giving the reader a wealth of additional information on the growing, assessment, harvesting and processing of the crop.
