Screwworm: the final chapter?
The discovery of the New World Screwworm in North Africa in 1988 led to a campaign to prevent its spread into other parts of Africa where it would have become a major threat to livestock, wildlife and human health. The continent would have been faced with livestock losses amounting to thousands of millions of dollars and ongoing treatment and control costs of hundreds of millions more. An account of the FAO response to this threat has now been documented in The New World Screwworm eradication programme: North Africa 19881992. It was a response that involved the Libyan government, the Mexico-American Commission for Screwworm Eradication, four UN agencies, the eight countries at immediate risk in North Africa and the wider international community through their financial support. The book opens with an introduction to the biology of the pest, continues with a history of the development of control methods, including the Sterile Insect Technique, and then looks at the international response to the emergency in North Africa. It provides detailed background information, much of it displayed graphically in charts, maps and photographs. It is a very readable, chronological account of the eradication programme. The many problems that arose, for example the outbreak of the Gulf War just five weeks into the main programme, and how those problems were overcome are all recorded. Considerable effort was made during the programme to ensure that information was well communicated to all those involved or affected by it. This book is the final part of that information exercise.
