The West African Centre for Economic and Social Studies
The West African Centre for Economic and Social Studies (Le Centre d'Etudes Economiques et Sociales de l'Afrique de l' Ouest, CESAO) is an international association based in Burkina Faso. Its mandate is to promote participatory and sustainable development in the Sudano-Sahelian zone. It seeks to exchange views and ideas with a broad range of organizations. Its priority targets are peasant or smallholder organizations because these are the ones through which it is possible to communicate with people, even with those who are normally 'voiceless', including women, young people, small farmers, livestock owners and village craftspeople. It has many kinds of approach. It promotes international events to ensure social and technical training of small farmers, helps with study tours and organizes workshops. The Centre is also involved in programmes that support the strengthening of small farmer associations. By means of several publications the Centre attempts to disseminate useful information and sustain interest and provoke thought on the main development problems affecting rural communities. These include: Exchange published in collaboration with the Groupe de recherches et d'appui pour l 'autopromotion paysanne (GRAAP) in which smallholders themselves tell of their own experiences; A series of Rural notes which provide information on: such things as technology, stimulation agriculture, and the environment; Building together, a magazine which provides a forum for in-depth articles and studies of rural associations and whose technical notes, matrices and diagrams are useful for field work; a series called Support to rural communities and other Occasional Papers that aim to assist field workers and others in their work; and The CESAO newsletter by which the Centre keeps its partners informed of its activities. All these publications are produced in simple language so they can be read by those with only a limited understanding of French. Some are also published in local languages including: A village organization in Africa in the Bamanan language sold at FCFA 600; A village builds its own terraces to improve its land in Moorish and Jula (FCFA 600); The life of a village cooperative in Moorish (FCFA 600); Compost enriches our soil in Jula (FCFA 600); and A path to village animation in Jula (FCFA 400). In March 1996 the Centre organized an international meeting on Let rural women speak. More than 150 rural women from villages all over the Sudano-Sahelian zone were able to share their experiences, to talk to support organizations and to organize themselves at an international level. The report of this meeting has summaries in English.
