West African irrigation and drainage association
Until recently, the West African irrigation community has had low representation in the activities of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID). Nigeria and Senegal were the only two countries with active local committees. However, in 1994, ICID requested the French Committee (AFEID) to help create further local African committees. Following an initial assessment of existing national and international initiatives, FAO and AFEID proposed that they should help to create a Regional African Irrigation Association (ARID). After a feasibility study on ARID, a two-day meeting was held in Burkina Faso in July 1996, at which a constitution for ARID was approved, the first-year programme and budget were defined, and a provisional board appointed. The first year's programme will mainly consist of promoting ARID in the 23 West and Central African countries expected to join. Other activities, such as bulletins, workshops and training sessions will also be promoted with the aim of incorporating West Africa into the international irrigation community.
