This is now spreading towards smaller portions, for an individual's or a day's consumption (such as individually packaged stock cubes, which provide portions for use). It protects: against contamination or pollution. A recent FAO report states that improvements in packaging and care could reduce post-harvest losses by 5%, resulting in increased food supply of 39 million tonnes annually. It informs: labelling on packaging tells the consumer about the ingredients, quantities and life of the product, as well as how to eat it and serve it up. It attracts: the visual presentation of a product helps to keep consumer's attention and interest.
