Institution building down on the farm

Sixteen leaders of young farmers' organisations from West and Central Africa, and Madagascar spent 10 days in November 1998 visiting counterpart organisations and farms in southern and eastern France. The purpose of the study visit was to develop partnerships, with an eye on strengthening information exchange and sharing professional skills. The visitors were impressed by the breadth of training given to young French farmers and by the support they received from government services. And both the visitors and the hosts were particularly interested in discussing how to raise the status and income of the young farmer. The study visit, one of a long-term programme, was organised by CTA as part of its focus on the mobilisation of civil society. For this visit, CTA worked with the French national centre for young farmers CNJA and the association of French farmers involved in international development AFDI.
