African inland fisheries

Production from fish farming in Africa nearly doubled in the period from 1984, when statistics were first produced, to 1992. Yet the aquaculture industry in Africa has the potential to yield much more. At present no comprehensive estimate of the potential of fish farming on the African continent has been produced, even though this information is essential for development planning. A technical paper from the Committee for Inland Fisheries for Africa (CIFA) looks at the potential for fish farming in 48 African countries at both commercial and subsistence levels, it considers not only whether it is possible to farm fish, but also how productive the farms would be and the likely market demand for fish. A second technical paper looks at one of the problems of inland fish farming in drought-prone regions. The paper looks at the lessons learned from restocking of reservoirs in Zimbabwe after its worst drought on record, (1991/1992). As the drought set in, many of the country's 12,000 artificial reservoirs dried up, resulting in loss of the fish stock. Unassisted restocking from downstream could not happen in many cases because the reservoirs were located on streams which do not flow all year round, or which do not carry the preferred species of fish. Artificial stocking techniques were therefore employed. The paper looks at the assessment of the drought affected reservoirs, the equipment used to transport the live fish, problems encountered and the success of the operation. The techniques discussed can be used not only following drought, but also when stocking reservoirs for the first time.
