Feeding and greening the world
Will overpopulation, global poverty, widespread hunger and environmental degradation lead to the collapse of human civilisation? Dramatic questions such as these have been asked over the last thirty years, and vet people are better fed now, live longer, and enjoy a higher standard of living than at any previous time in history. Conversely, more people than ever before are now hungry or malnourished, suffering abject poverty, bearing unwanted children and causing serious damage to their environments. Without wishing to minimize the challenges of today or the risks of tomorrow Feeding and greening the world argues that despite the depressing image often painted of the world, the future should be faced with confidence. Man's understanding of the world's problems is increasing, and methods of sustainable management of the world's resources are starting to be developed. But is this progress being made quickly enough? The objective of the book is to identify the particular areas where information is lacking and hence those where further research is required, while drawing attention to the decline in international funding which could have lead to this research. The book is written in a jargon-free style that should appeal to a wide range of readers.
