A handbook for agrohydrology

The aim of this book is to show which hydrological factors are important and how they can be measured, so that any opportunity for improving the water supply to crops can be taken. The core interest of the guide is runoff, the surface flow of water and the rainfall and catchment conditions that cause it. Techniques for the measurement of runoff and its associated meteorological variables are presented with details on suitability, selection, manufacture and operation of equipment. Soil erosion and sedimentary processes are discussed in terms of both field data collection and the use of empirical formulae. Alternative field and laboratory methods for measuring soil moisture are described. Water harvesting techniques for use in semi-arid environments are discussed in the context of increasing catchment size, peak flows and runoff volumes, and the field data from research trials are given for each main category of water harvesting technique. The planning, design and construction of the field structures - bunds, ridges and waterways - that are essential in water harvesting research and practice are also discussed. Methods for the analysis of hydro-meteorological data are described, illustrating both statistical and non-statistical techniques. The book is directed at agricultural projects whose staff do not have the specialized skills of the hydrologist and at hydrologists whose experience in the agricultural field is limited.
