Advancing IPM in the Caribbean
A CTA-CARDI workshop was held in Barbados from 16-19 October, 1994, to initiate a Caribbean IPM network and to develop the network's plan of action for 1995-96. The network is needed in order to give an impetus to the adoption of IPM in the region. The workshop adopted resolutions which set out the reasons why governments in the region should adopt IPM as national policy: which highlighted the need to develop local taxonomic services for identifying pests and predators; which recognized the need to identify IPM skill requirements; and which urged donors to promote IPM practices. The proposal to develop such a network originated from a seminar held in the Dominican Republic in 1993 entitled: Integrated pest management: new strategies for the Caribbean farmer. This seminar was organized by CTA in collaboration with four regional and national bodies (see Spore 50). Copies of the proceedings of the 1993 meeting were published last year and are now available from CTA.
