Chad s gum makes a come-back
Gum arabic, an extract of the tree Acacia senegal, is regaining interest after alternative products have fallen into discredit: gelatine fell from consumer favour after the 'mad cow' scandal, and starches too, in the light of the debates about genetically modified organisms. With production falling in the world s leading producer country, Sudan, its neighbour Chad has boosted its production to become the second largest exporter in the world. A French volunteer organisation has been involved in supporting the Arabic gum sector, in cultivation, harvesting, drying and packing techniques, as well as shipment and the organisation of marketing.
