Upwardly mobile townies

Responding to the cover article 'Take Your Farm to the City' in Spore 81, Jean Revol of Montélimar, France, is concerned that urban agriculture means bad news for cities. 'Africa's cities are spreading wildly, with no planning and vegetation, and the wealthy build their massive single-storey villas, eating up space. The costs of infrastructure and transport go up, and people lose a lot of time travelling. It s time for African city managers to realise that cities should grow upwards, not horizontally. Of course, until they wake up to this, urban agriculture is a solution, a lesser evil.'
