Castor: more than oil

Observing the results of leaving castor plants to grow on fallow land an increase in soil moisture and organic matter content, and good weed control Julius Mwangwale, an innovative farmer in Tanzania, has experimented successfully with intercropping castor with maize. His best maize yields, though, have come from leaving the castor plants to run on their own for two years, then clearing the land and cultivating maize. Along with extension officer M V Komba, he is now sharing this technique with other farmers through look-and-learn visits in the region.
