To catch or cultivate

Faced with an annual import bill of US$ 250,000 for shrimps mainly for tourist consumption the Government of Grenada is supporting attempts to establish shrimp cultivation on the island. Shrimp farming and research was started two decades ago by the Chinese Aquaculture Demonstration Centre, and has met a fair share of local demand. Imports from Trinidad and Guyana have remained necessary and now five shrimp farmers have started production on a small scale. The government s plans will cover a part of the initial investments for the creation of ponds and pipes, and for providing concessions.
