Grains of truth 2
Commenting on the article Grains of truth on genetic modification in Spore 88, our faithful correspondent Samuel Zeleke in Gambella, Ethiopia, writes: 'In most ACP States especially in Africa, agricultural research has been conducted on finding new varieties of plants or new breeds of animals using mostly traditional breeding techniques involving mass gene transfer. These methods are slow and take many years to succeed. Africa has a vast resource of fauna and flora of various species that have good potential for GMO research. So far however these huge resources have not been utilised efficiently. African states must believe and accept the advantages of GMO research over traditional breeding techniques for developing (new varieties) in a brief time.'
