Biotechnology and the small-scale farmer

Biotechnology has the potential to contribute to the solution of some of the problems facing small-scale farmers, but a redirection of some international biotechnology research programmes is needed. The firs step in such a redirection is a careful analysis of how, and under which conditions, biotechnology can contribute to sustainable rural development and how choices can be made between various options. Methods used to identify research priorities in biotechnologies in developing countries and the problems facing small scale farmers, are analysed in the first part of Biotechnology for small-scale farmers in developing countries. The middle section of the book is de voted to different technical aspects of agricultural biotechnology and its implications. The book ends with two country case histories.
