The Research Director's handbook

This book, written as an open letter, is intended as a guide to a newly-appointed Agricultural Research Director facing numerous and complex problems. It is divided into two sections and is a frank account of all aspects of agricultural research management that may be encountered in developing country institutions. Part One deals with such issues as planning human resource needs, motivation for excellence and managing funds and budgets, as well as improved decision-making and building up management skills. In each instance practical examples are given. The second part is a presentation of a research strategy for sustainable agricultural development. The importance of biotechnology together with ecological and socio-economic considerations are discussed. The book concludes with a dissertation on a minimum input strategy, including the key role of on-farm studies.
