Combating fish loss

Huge quantities of fish are lost after capture. This is an enormous waste of food, particularly in developing countries where fish represents a significant proportion of protein intake. Provided that seas and lakes are not overfished, fish should be seen as a renewable natural resource. There are, however, increasing signs that many fish resources are being exploited at or above their maximum sustainable yields, It is therefore very important that post-harvest losses are reduced so that maximum use can be made of these precious resources. Unfortunately, fish is one of the most perishable of all staple commodities. In the tropical climates of most developing countries it can easily become unfit for human consumption within a day of capture. Even after processing the fish may be subject to loss or spoilage. A new guide, Post-harvest losses of fish in the tropics, produced by the Natural Resources Institute examines physical, economic and nutritional losses in some detail.
