ILEIA - networking for sustainable agriculture

The Information Centre for Low External Input and Sustainable Agriculture (ILEIA) provides information to organizations and individuals about agricultural development in the Tropics. It can provide information about practical methods and the scientific principles on which such methods are based, as well as about specific management strategies by which conversion to more sustainable, low input farming may be achieved. ILEIA, which has been active in collecting, exchanging and disseminating information on sustainable agriculture since 1982, consists of 4,000 individuals and groups and serves as their channel of communication. It encourages South-South exchange and collaborates with similar groups in the South and in tile North. ILEIA publishes a quarterly newsletter in English which includes news items and other articles of interest to those in the field of agricultural development. It also documents Low External Input and Sustainable Agriculture (LEISA) and People-centred Participatory Technology Development (PTD) experiences and assesses those experiences in workshops. ILEIA supports the establishment of regional LEISA networks in the Tropics and associated small libraries and information centres. There are many LEISA networks and more are emerging, for example in The Philippines, India and Ghana. The Newsletter is distributed free to Third World organizations and individuals but costs Dfl.50 for Western recipients. In December 1990 a special 67 page publication, the ILEIA Network Register, was produced. This contains the names and addresses of all LEISA contacts. Also published are the Proceedings of the ILEIA Workshop on Participatory Technology Development; the ILEIA Reader on PTD; and the ILEIA Resources Guide on Low External Input and Sustainable Agriculture and People-centred Technology Development. ILEIA also assists Third World organizations to find funding for the establishment of small libraries on sustainable agriculture. ILEIA, Kastanjelaan 5 PO Box 64, 3830 AB Leusden THE NETHERLANDS
