Rural radio training in Africa
Since its inception CTA has always recognized the importance of radio as an information medium in ACP countries where illiteracy is high and the press often weak or unreliable. CTA has therefore forged special links with the presenters, producers and journalists who broadcast rural radio and specialist programmes in the ACP States. These 'facilitators', as they like to be called, are considered vital agents in CTA's mission of disseminating scientific and technical information for agricultural and rural development. In November 1990 two training workshops were held concurrently: one for 14 anglophone agricultural radio journalists at the Zambian Institute of Mass Communication (Zamcom) in Lusaka; another for 14 francophone broadcasters at the Voice of Zaire (Sevoza) training studio in Kinshasa. The theme was poultry keeping and each participant had to present a report for his colleagues to assess. The sessions included a presentation of each national broadcasting system and of documentary research to date. Interview techniques, programme formats and systems of documentary research were studied. Finally, participants were able to practice putting programmes together as a group exercise. Support programmes, targeted specifically at rural radio journalists and presenters, are obviously beneficial and in 1991 CTA will continue this programme with two further workshops.
