Animal traction workshop proceedings

The West Africa Animal Traction Network aims to foster the use of animal power for agricultural development and encourage the exchange of information and cooperation among its members and outside West Africa, through technical workshops and other media. The Network and CTA have recently published the proceedings of the third such work shop, held in July 1988 at Saly, Senegal. The proceedings are edited by Paul Starkey and Adama Faye. Specialists in animal traction from 24 countries met to learn from one another's experiences in the field of animal traction research, development, extension and training. The first part of the volume summarizes workshop activities and conclusions. The second half of the volume contains 60 edited papers written by participants on technical, social and economic aspects of animal traction. They deal with research, the developments of animal-drawn implements and animal-powered equipment, the economics of animal traction, constraints to development and the impact of animal traction on different farming systems.
