IRETA research news

J.R. Finlay, of the Atoll Research and Development Unit at the University of the South Pacific, reports that split applications of nitrogenous fertilizers give higher yield increases than single applications. Finlay's work m Kiribati also indicates that the effect of compost is inferior to that of equivalent amounts of inorganic fertilizers for short-term crops. In his studies, trickle irrigation produced higher yields than other methods in sweet potato. In Pandanus, terminal stem cuttings (1-2cm in length) were found to develop roots readily when moisture and aeration were adequate. Studies by S. Ochetim at USP Alafua, on the use of locally-available ingredients in the feeds of pigs and poultry indicate that copra cake can be successfully included in up to 70% of a pig's diet, 60% of a layer's diet and 33% of a broiler's diet. His studies show that up to one-half of this copra can be susbstituted with dried brewers' grains and that cassava and sugar cane can replace imported grains in diets. For small-scale production complete diets can be formulated using a combination of cassava, freshly-grated coconut, breadfruit, copra and copra cake, sweet potato vines, molasses, freshly-mixed fish, meat and bone meal, green grass, coral sand and salt.
