Composting to save the soil
PRONAT, the Protecffon of Nature team of ENDA (organizahon for Environment and Development in Africa) is operating a scheme to train Senegalese farmers in the use of compost in improving crop yield and soil productivity, in order to limit the advance of the desert and the damage done by chemical fertilizers. Organic fertilizers not only brige the essenhal nutrients to the soil but also improve its condition and, above all, its ability to retain moisture. It is particularly useful for areas in which a single-crop cultivation has exhausted the soil. In Sahelian Africa, the most common organic substances are dung, groundnut wastes, fish scraps, and various vegetable matter. PRONAT, in cooperahon with farmers' groups in the region and with Malsons Familiales Rurales, is organizing training sessions. These last for two to three days, and farmers learn about benefits and methods of composting through practical demonstration and slide shows in Wolof, the Senegalese language. ENDA has also published an illustrated brochure in French and Wolof, giving directions for making a compost heap.
