Mangoes

This collection of review papers is edited by Dr Roslyn Prinsley and Greg Tucker who see the fruit as one with a great future, providing several obstacles can be overcome. Among these are Anthracnose post-harvest damage, and the short shelf-life of the mango. As there appears to be little potential for the expansion of local markets in most mango-growing areas, there is a need to look for, and to cater for, the export market. There appears to be an ever-increasing demand for mangoes in the European Community, the USA and Canada. With this in mind the papers set out to explo;e all aspects of marketing and to compare the mango with other exotic fruit and vegetables The short shelf-life of the mango itself is the main problem with exporting as it necessitates the use of airfreight, which is expensive. The availability of sea-freight services provides a price advantage to the eastern Caribbean exporters, but the restrictions on the use of ethylene dibromide for fumigation against the fruit-fly in the USA will put a ban on exports from most of the islands. Similarly, the problem of Anthracnose post-harvest damage is serious and jusitifes a complete chapter on methods for its control At the end of each paper there is a list of references or cited literature. As tropical fruits are becoming more popular in Western society and are demanded by g;oups from the Caribbean, Asia and Africa, this book will be invaluable to anyone involved in the production or marketing of mangoes.
