Beans to resist weevils

Wild beans that resist the attack of weevils in stores have been discovered by scientists at the Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) Colombia and are being incorporated into new weevil-resistant commercial varieties. The wild bean, discovered in Mexico, showed high levels of resistance to the bruchid weevils Zabrotes subfasciatus and Acathoscelides obtectus, which are the most important pests of stored beans in Africa and Latin America. The nature of the resistance is antibiotic: the plant has a significant deleterious effect on the biology of the insects and their survival; adult emergence in resistant varieties is drastically reduced, the life cycle of adults that survive is prolonged and their progeny are typoically small.
