Prosopis - potential for arid land

Prosopis species have proved valuable multipurpose trees for arid lands, and the International Prosopis Association is publishing a newsletter on the genus. Thickets of P. jubiflora (mesquite) can be grown along field boundaries, along roads and water courses and abandoned land to provide smalldiameter fuelwood and poles and the pods can be milled to provide a feed relished by sheep and cattle. The beans can be toxic when used as the sole source of animal fodder but they can help create a balanced diet when mixed with other feedstuffs. A thornless clone of P. alba has been developed in the USA. It has a dense wood that makes excellent firewood and, if allowed to mature makes an excellent shade tree. Prosopis will grow successfully in brackish water and clones of P. alba, P. jubiflora and P. flexuosa which grew in 100% seawater have been identified. However, it is not known yet whether this nitrogen-fixing species can develop rhizabia nodules at high salinity or whether the nodules have to be established at low salinities first.
