CIDARC, another source of information on tropical agriculture
In Montpellier, France, CIRAD has recently established the International Centre for Documentation on Hot Climate Agriculture (CIDARC), which has brought together all the documentation resources previously held by its different departments. These collections deal with forestry, livestock, veterinary services, agronomy, locusts, ecology and agricultural mechanisation as well as the following crops: coffee, cocoa, rubber, cotton and other textiles, fruit, and oil plants. In total, this data base consists of over 520,000 bibliographic references, including all work produced by ClRAD's eleven departments and research units as well as publications collected from other sources. With such a rich documentation resource, CIDARC offers the followina services: - a Question and Answer Service enabling on-line access to the major French and international data bases - regular diffusion of selected information on specific research themes, and - a library open to students, teachers, researchers and extension workers involved in agricultural development. To refresh your memory, ClRAD is the French Centre for International Cooperation on Agricultural Research and Development which, in 1984 succeeded GERDAT, the Research and Study Group for Tropical Agricultural Development. ClRAD's mandate is to provide technical assistance to research institutes in developing countries, to undertake its own research programmes, and to run specialised training courses for both French and other researchers working on hot climate agriculture. CTA and CIRAD Ever since it was established, CTA has worked closely with many CIRAD departments, notably IEMVT, IRAT and IRFA (see box) on a number of specific projects including technical meetings, reference works (atlases, bibliographies) and other studies. CTA/CIRAD cooperation in the field of information dissemination has increased to the point where a formal agreement has been signed. It deals with a programme of selected information diffusion, responses to specific questions, bibliographic services, training, joint publication and the promotion and organisation of exchanges of information and experience between ACP and EEC countries. This agreement has helped to cement the links already established, to the mutual benefit of both organizations. CTA gains access to an exceptional source of information on tropical agriculture and ClRAD gains an opening to both English and Portuguese speaking audiences as well as francophone ACP countries that it has had little contact with.
